Leeds Piano Competition 2021

Post by Rach3 » Thu Sep 09, 2021 3:42 pm

Second round to conclusion has now started.I believe this round is the first one in person, live audience. The initial 8 ( of 22 ) videos are now posted. If interested, would suggest the extraordinary Schumann,Stravinsky playing of Ms.Roh, who may be a laureate :

I also enjoyed the Scriabin 4th Sonata of Mr.Kelly, and the entire recital of Mr.Rokni , CPE Bach,Beethoven,Schubert, and my first hearing of Hindemith’s tour de force “Suite 1922 “, Op.26.

Hindemith's piano music, like some of his chamber pieces, is a bit tough for me to wrap my head around, but I'll give it a try. Thanks for this, Rach3!

Rokni is certainly choosing atypical programs for a competition.Be interesting to see if he survives 2nd Round. Here is his First Round I decided to also hear :

https://leedspiano.medici.tv/en/replay/ ... ash-rokni/

Louis Couperin, Prelude in G minor
Georg Muffat , Passacaglia in G minor
Arnold Schoenberg, Piano Suite,Op.25 (without score ! )

Rokni did not survive.Typical competition jury aesthetics.

Couple other notable performances ( there have been others ):

https://leedspiano.medici.tv/en/replay/ ... aolu-zang/ Shostakovich Piano Quintet,Op.57 (these forces met for the first time about 48 hours before the performance )

https://leedspiano.medici.tv/en/replay/ ... iuchereva/ Liszt, Rhapsodie Espagnole

Join the "club" regarding Hindemith's piano music, Brian, but like you, I will give it a listen!

After listening to Kliuchereva in the Mozart Rondo and hearing a very subdued left hand I wondered if this was maybe a weakness. The Rhapsodie Espagnole totally dispelled that theory. Her left hand is phenomenal.

The link provided me with access to her semifinal performances and the Ligeti "Devils Staircase" was jaw dropping. However, just listen to her with the Castalian Quartet in the Dvorak Op 81 Piano Quintet. This is one of my all time favourite chamber works (and I have the Richter/Borodin from Moscow). This was a wonderfully lively performance and she complemented the Castalian's so well. Are we looking at a competition winner here? The way juries work guarantees nothing so we'll see. I'm impressed.
